In Overworld, science and technology have largely supplanted most uses of magic. In cases where magic is still used, it's primarily for utility and industry. Inherently magical beings — sorcerers and the like — are largely relegated to the working class where their magic skills let them power and operate heavy machinery, whereas less magically attuned beings are generally part of the ruling political classes. Magical education is largely nonexistent and wizards are rare in most places.
Most ground transportation in Overworld is accomplished by use of horses, though primitive magic-powered cars and large blimp-like airships are not uncommon. Blackpowder weapons exist and often make use of magical ammunition.
Overworld is highly populated in many areas, and the largest cities are multi-tiered. Capital cities usually have skyscrapers that extend just as far under ground as they do above, and the slums of these cities are often far below the natural surface of the planet. In most of the less populated areas, large farms and ranches dominate the landscape.
Overworld has a wide variety of climates and species. It has a single small moon which is in turn orbited by a handful of large asteroids.
Overworld's rotational axis is tilted only a few degrees off the plane of its orbit, leading to mild changes in seasonal weather and generally warm climate across the entire surface. While the seasons are usually mild, there is still a very wide array of climate types. Most equatorial regions are vast rocky deserts, and wide plains and prairies are common. Rainforests are also common just off the equator, transitioning to milder climates beyond the tropics.
The south pole of Overworld is covered by a small unnamed and uninhabited continent, and the north by a vast, relatively warm ocean that's heated by volcanic activity under the surface.
Overworld is tectonically active. The main plates make up much of the land surface, and vast mountain ranges exist at points where plates interact.
Overworld contains a vast number of species, both sentient and not. Natural philosophy is not as pervasive as mathematics, engineering, or magical engineering, so many animal species are only informally described.
There are three major continents on Overworld; Erevil, Sensis, and Kodama. Additionally, there are smaller continents and large islands peppered around the globe.
Erevil has a largely homogenous population of elves which is broken into small regional kingdoms. Despite the continent consisting largely of an elven population, its largest cities and ports are still extremely racially and culturally diverse. The general feel of Erevil is comparable to Victorian England.
Sensis has seven large countries along with several small island nations. The southern countries of this continent insist that they are on a separate continent called Kondai that only connects to the rest of the continent with a large land bridge. The countries of Sensis are comparable to Mediterranean cultures, and are very racially diverse.
Kodama is almost entirely under rule by a dwarven dynasty that has existed for about 600 years. Its trade with other regions is fairly restricted, though its close proximity to Erevil has made for a booming black market along its Western coastline. Kodama's culture is largely comparable to feudal Japan.
Eisor has been inaccessible to the outside world for longer than most countries have kept records. About 1000 years ago, a dictator conquered the continent and enslaved or killed any non-humans he could find. The entire region was subsequently sealed off in a demiplane, and knowledge of the location of the entrance has been lost to time.
Halicarn was originally a largely unpopulated region in the north. Over the past century or so, its sparse population has started to grow as valuable metals and minerals were found in its mountains after large-scale climate change — as a result of Eisor being sealed off — melted the permafrost in the area.
The Southern Wastes
A continent spanning the sourthern regions of Overworld. It largely consists of a frozen desert covering the south pole. There are no known settlements in this wasteland, and even most arctic creatures tend to shun it in favor of more fertile ground to the north.
The Northern Ocean
A vast ocean covering the entire north pole region of Overworld. Intense volcanic and tectonic activity on the ocean floor tend to keep the water surprisingly warm, and very little ice tends to form despite the freezing air.
Most areas of Overworld have highly developed and multi-layered infrastructure. Over several thousand years, giant continent-spanning megalopolises have grown across the world. Several parts of these mega cities are almost as deep as they are high, with millions of individuals living almost their entire lives underground.
Magically-supported skyscrapers can be seen in the hearts of most metropolitan areas, and impossibly thin bridges connect many of these structures. Hovering aerial structures in these cities are common as a means of expanding existing buildings to use more space.
The primary means of support for these buildings are passive magical engines. Magical energy is channeled into storage crystals at the hearts of these engines, and the engines provide upward support for buildings that would be impossible with traditional building techniques. The engines slowly drain the crystals of power, requiring a staff of magic users to periodically recharge them.
Extensive underground foundations, sewers, and water systems exist in most areas, even outside cities. Many of these underground structures are densely populated, and subterranean slums called 'warrens' are common. Because most large buildings have extensive systems of sub-basements and support structures, many tenement buildings are often much more highly populated below ground than above.
The lowest levels of these communities, the warrens, often have problems with crime, poverty, and disease. This, combined with the difficulty in moving between different levels because of tight control by organized crime, makes it difficult or impossible for most residents of the warrens to leave.
when residents of the lower levels are actually able to make it out of the warrens, it's often through sewer and ventilation systems connected to the upper levels of buildings. These sewer and ventilation systems are often very hazardous, being prone to flooding, collapse, and infestation by various hostile creatures.
Communication between different areas of Overworld can be accomplished in many ways, though the easiest and most common is by postal or messenger service. Postal and messenger packages are delivered much how you may expect, utilizing horse-drawn carriages carrying loads of mail, though airships are sometimes used for long-distance deliveries.
Other long distance communication methods exist, however. Magic, being commonplace and highly industrialized, has made it easy to send messages across great distances with relative ease. Various scrying implements, portals, scrolls, mirrors, and spells have made it relatively easy to communicate fairly quickly with individuals across the globe.
Travel & Transport
Magical and mechanical transportation are fairly common in Overworld, though these transport methods are often too expensive for most people to use on a regular basis. The most common forms of transportation are still horses, boats, and occasionally other types of animal- or human-powered transportation.
Despite the expense involved, magical engines have slowly started to spur a mechanical transport revolution. Primitive ground vehicles resembling early cars have started to become increasingly common as inventors, tinkerers, and self-taught magic users have begun building complex machines to move them from place to place.
