Session 6: Ledgers, Letters, and Looming Shadows

Summary

With Naris, Nikita, and Tulwar reunited at street level, they decided to move quickly to avoid some policemen. After a bit of back-and-forth with the accountant, Zlatan, the Worms decided to take him to a nearby pub and get him absolutely hammered in an effort to loosen him up. Some clever persuasion, accomplished by Tulwar and Naris after several drinks and a well-timed Friends spell, led to Zlatan handing over his ledger.

Meanwhile, at the nearby College of Rahm, Quest sought to deliver a letter to the Dean of the Arts, Sir Edmund Courtland. Encountering a very curious and helpful gnome who introduced himself as said dean, Quest handed over the letter. Quest and the dean (actually Toben, in a clever and nigh-impenetrable disguise) sat on the steps to the administration building and read the letter:

To the desk of Sir Edmund Courtland
Dean of the Arts
College of Rahm

My dear Edmund,

These last weeks since our correspondence, the situation here at the monastery has taken a negative turn. In my last letter I described to you the earthquakes and strange lights in the sky, and I can only assume that these latest developments are related.

Over the last few weeks, stories reached the monastery from nearby settlements detailing raids by bandits riding in from the desert. These raids seem to always follow immediately after the tremors in the earth. As we do, the monastery has provided aid to the locals, but otherwise kept to ourselves.

Everything changed for us two nights ago when raiders struck our home. A short battle followed, and I can now say with deep regret that the raiders have struck a personal blow. My good friend and colleague Brother Velcus was slain by these savages before we were able to drive them away.

And so I send you this letter with a simple plea:

Please, using all your powers and connections in the local government of Rahm, send us help.

We are unequipped to deal with this menace, and would be forever grateful for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Yours in His holy embrace,

Abbot Garrett
Holy Monastery of Pelor
Tumblestone

As they finished reading the letter, a distant rumbling sound and a large number of fleeing people brought their attention to what looked like a hovering crystalline mountain carving a path of destruction through distant buildings, and steadily getting closer to the College.

The Worms, now having thoroughly inebriated Zlatan the accountant and getting a little buzzed themselves, suddenly heard a commotion outside the pub. Exiting, they found that people were rushing away from a huge shadow being cast from just beyond some nearby skyscrapers. As they went to investigate, the Worms watched in shock as a mountain of greenish blue crystal, dirt, and rocks tore through a tall tenement building and demolished its upper stories.

Nikita, eager to help anyone who might be injured or in need of aid, rushed forward as huge chunks of rock and earth fell to the street around him, while chunks of crystal also broke off but hung in the air. Tulwar was hesitant to follow, but Naris ran to keep up. Running through the hail of falling debris, the Worms also started to see humanoid bodies falling from the hovering mountain and raining onto the street along with the debris.

As the Worms searched the rubble for survivors, the mountain slowly made its way above them and started to shear into a taller building across the street. Pulling a small child from some rubble, Nikita and Naris watched as one of the falling humanoid bodies landed squarely on a horseless carriage in front of them. It impacted with a resounding crash, and its scaly green skin was soon covered by more debris.

Watching this scene from a distance, Quest and “the dean” decided to mount Quest’s horse and ride north around the destruction. As they rode, the sound of huge chunks of rock impacting a skyscraper echoed across the campus and they could see half of the mountain separating and breaking off.

Session 5: Bluffs, Baths, and Blubbering Accountants

Summary

After accepting a job from Vlad, the Worms decided to make their way up to the surface. Ossa, hating technology and everything it stands for, elected to take the stairs with Lil Scrotie. Meanwhile Naris and Nikita, with a terrified accountant named Zlatan in tow, decided to investigate the elevator. The payment options not being to their liking, Naris and Nikita decided that wanton slaughter was the only option, and thus murdered the guards standing in front of the elevator.

Leaving a pile of corpses behind, Naris and Nikita made their way to the ground floor.

Meanwhile, nearby, Tulwar made a few terrible decisions in relation to disguise, and ended up running past the guards at the stairs. Making his way up to the surface, he bluffed his way into a bath house and had a much-needed soak.

Elsewhere, Toben explored a local university after having been directed there by a couple of friendly constables. With some quick thinking and a bit of logical reasoning, he managed to find the library as well as the dormitories, some clean clothing, and a few maps of the university and world in general. Taking some time from his busy day, he also scrounged together the components for a Cap of Water Breathing.

Finally meeting up with Tulwar at street level, Naris and Nikita (plus one terrified and shock-stricken accountant) realized that Ossa was nowhere to be found. As they looked around for their companion, a couple of very concerned-looking policemen seemed to be heading straight for them.

Experience and Rewards

For a variety of smart, fun, and generally interesting decisions, each of the party members received 400 xp.

Naris and Nikita each received 150 xp for killing the guards.

Additional xp was awarded to each of the party members for fun in-character decisions. Please check your character sheets.

Session 3: Escape From the Sewers

Summary

At the end of the fight with the kobolds, Nikita rushed forward to grab Nastya off of what looked like an altar. Seeing that he was going to get the prize, M and Asir immediately made a move to steal the gun, but were quickly subdued and disarmed by the rest of the Worms.

The group noticed shortly that the sewage level was rising, and elected to make a hasty getaway before drowning, thus leaving Toben to whatever fate he found in the drain. Pushing forward to the next room, Naris used his magical energy to start a large pump, halting the rising sewage as it was reaching waist level.

Moving along through a few other hallways and rooms, the group happened upon a drainage room with two open pipes. In one of these Ossa found Lil Scrotie, a strange hovering pink ball of flesh with one big red eye. The two took to each other immediately.

Working their way up a large spiral staircase, the Worms encountered a Mimic, though it was quickly subdued. In the commotion, M and Asir fled. Investigating the chest that the Mimic had been hiding inside, Tulwar found a pouch containing 23 gp.

After a short round of intimidation and flipping the bird at some kobolds, the Worms finally made their way out of the sewers. Upon reaching Mama Chekhov's compound, the Worms haggled with Vlad and convinced him to give them 1400 gp instead of the previously promised 200 gp per head.

Experience and Rewards

For retrieving Nastya, each of the party members received 500 xp, and the party received 1400 gp.

For killing the Mimic, each of the party members received 112 xp.

For a variety of exciting acts and general derring-do, Naris and Tulwar received 100 xp, Nikita received 150 xp, and Ossa received 200 xp.

Lil Scrotie has joined the party.

Session 2: Engaging the Kobolds

Summary

Picking up right where we left off in Session 1, the Worms were holding a rope tied around Toben's waist as he worked his way down a river of sewage. Watching in horror, Tulwar, Nikita, and Naris were helpless as a large pile of driftwood and other debris tore through the rope and separated Toben from them. Determined to not leave their friend to a nasty fate, they all jumped in the sewage and swam after Toben, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Meanwhile, at the entrance to sub-basement 13, Ossa encountered Piero arguing with some of Mama Chekhov's guards. After a brief exchange and a bit of haggling, Ossa and Piero made their way to the sewers in hopes of catching up with the rest of the Worms. Ossa's deep hatred for technology compelled her to destroy two large pumps, while Piero decided to forge ahead.

Now trying to stay afloat in the lukewarm river of sewage, Tulwar, Nikita, and Naris just managed to catch hold of a ledge and pull themselves up just before they would have been swallowed by a large drain. Immediately encountering a curious kobold, they kicked him into the water and engaged his numerous friends.

Ossa, having not kept track of Piero's location, lost him in a series of tunnels, and eventually decided to jump in the sewage flowing towards the sunlit room. After a brief struggle trying to stay afloat, she saw a rope flying to her from a friendly looking gnome. Pulled ashore by Tulwar to join the rest of the Worms, Ossa joined in the fight.

With their numbers bolstered, the Worms fought through a horde of kobolds, killed their leader, and found Nastya just as M and Asir made their way into the large drain room.

Experience and Rewards

As a whole, the party received 262 xp.

For a variety of exciting acts and general derring-do, Tulwar and Naris each received an additional 50xp.

Nikita currently holds Nastya and found a pile of mechanical bits and bobs that looks like it's worth about 200gp.

Session 1: Into the Sewers

Summary

Naris made his way down to sub-basement 13 of the Starr Suites building. Once down there, he learned from some guards posted outside the stairwell that entry into Chekhov territory is free, but leaving costs a fee of 200 gp.

Naris followed some directions to get to the Chekhov compound where he met up with Nikita, Toben, and Tulwar. Shortly thereafter, a skinny, very sweaty looking man named Piero showed up, apparently there to also help with the same job. A large tabaxi known as M and a very short dragonborn named Asir showed up soon after, and everyone was ushered into the Chekhov compound by Vlad.

Vlad, calling the entire party "worms" because he didn't want to learn any names, explained that some shitty little kobolds had raided the compound recently, and stolen Mama Chekhov's prized Nastya. These shitty little kobolds made their way back to the sewers with the gun, managing to slip through the Chekhov guards' fingers. Vlad provided the Worms with a map of the sewers and told them that there would be a 200 gp per person reward for successfully retrieving Nastya.

The Worms made their way to the sewer gate and along the way, with a clever casting of the Friends spell, Naris convinced Piero that the guards at the stairwell needed him for something. Entering the sewers sans Piero, the party entered the sewers and tried to move quickly in case Piero was following close behind.

After turning on the pumps, the party encountered a Gelatinous Cube in a hallway nearby which was trying to consume M. M managed to escape, and she ran off with Asir in a panic. The Worms managed to defeat the Cube, with Nikita dealing the killing blow. From here, they pursued M and Asir, but weren't able to catch up.

Deciding to push on, the Worms heard a thunderous crack and eventually decided to toss Toben into a fast-flowing stream of sewage to investigate some sunlight at the end of a long tunnel, reasoning that the sound may have come from the same direction. With some rope tied around his waist as a safety measure, Toben made his way down the fast-flowing stream and saw a large room with sunlight streaming down into it.

Following another loud explosion, Toben caught sight of what looked like a limb flying through the air.

Experience and Rewards

For their troubles, the party received 162 xp.

Naris, providing a nice in-character moment getting rid of Piero, received an additional 50 xp.

Nikita, landing a spectacular killing blow on the Gelatinous Cube, received an additional 50 xp.

Session Zero
Characters, setup, and world building

This should serve to get everyone up to speed who isn't already.

We had our first session on Friday, the 13th. It mostly just consisted of character and world building.

The Players

Dustin, an elf sorceror
Erin, a half-elf druid
Gavin, a dwarf cleric
Jason, a gnome artificer
Jayson, some manner of roguish type that I forgot to write down because I'm a terrible person

The Setup

Vlad, the head enforcer for the Chekhov crime family in the warrens of a large coastal city, has approached each of the player characters asking for a favor. Mama Chekhov's prized blunderbuss Nastya has gone missing after the family compound was raided by kobolds living in the nearby sewers.

The kobolds, not being very bright, seem to think that Mama Chekhov's power comes from Nastya, instead of from ruling with an iron fist. Naturally they'd want to steal this precious artifact from her.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and you probably want to accept it because Vlad really likes to show people his knives) is to get into the sewers, track down the kobolds, and retrieve Nastya.

World Building

Aside from going over character sheets, I also asked everyone to come up with a person, place, and thing that their characters would have heard of. These would be in the form of rumors or fairytales, and the character probably shouldn't know whether they're true or not.

A couple of my personal favorites were:

  • An old man who meditates in a giant tree in Erevil, and who may be able to point visitors towards interesting objects
  • An untouched valley in the far north of Sensis that is said to contain ancient and terrible creatures (Like, dinosaur-type creatures. Oh yes.)

Next Session

The current plan is to have the first gameplay session on Wednesday, January 25th. I'll confirm that date with everyone before setting up a Facebook event.

Making Characters

The characters page currently has a few NPCs and PCs on it. If you are signed up for Obsidian Portal already, send me a friend request and I'll get you added to this campaign.

Members of the campaign are able to add and edit characters and wiki pages. If you feel there's something you want to add, something that needs correction, or something that needs to be expanded, go right ahead.
